ABOUT US

The Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Love is a religious Institute of Women of Pontifical Right. We, members of this religious institute based on the teachings and life of Jesus Christ, dedicate ourselves totally and wholeheartedly to the author of life, through the Evangelical Councils of Chastity, Poverty and Obedience in the service of God and humanity. The profession of these three vows in the Congregation of the Daughters of Divine Love means a deliberate and conscious effort to live and serve with love in response to the Divine Love Incarnate who died that we may have life. The members live in communities where we combine contemplation with action and our charism of generous loving response to Divine Love Incarnate carries us to various apostolates in different parts of the world.

Apostolate of the DDL

The apostolate of the Daughters consists primarily in the witness of their consecrated life to Divine Love. In keeping with the founder’s vision, the diverse apostolate of the Congregation provides service in every ministry where the manifestation of God’s love is needed. Currently these ministries include – Education: teaching at various levels – pre-care, nursery, primary, secondary, tertiary. Health Care: ministry in hospitals, nursing homes, pro-life centers. Rehabilitation: teaching and care giving, working with the mentally and physically challenged. Pastoral work: - Pastoral associates, religious directors and coordinators, youth ministry, spiritual and retreat directors. Social Work: reaching out to the rejected, homeless, drug addicts and teenage mothers. Culinary and Liturgical arts, Hospitality centers. The Daughters respond to the needs of the Local Church according to the availability of personnel with the right qualification, ability, and aptitude. The Daughters carrying bravely the shield of Christian faith courageously undertake any apostolate for the glory of God and the salvation of souls, their own souls first and foremost (Founder’s Preface cf. DDL Const).

Contribution of the DDL to the Church

The Daughters of Divine Love Congregation has made modest but significant contributions to the Church in Nigeria. Generally, the Daughters have made the Church very visible in many places through their varied apostolates, like Apostolate of presence, Pastoral and Social Services etc.

It was the Daughters who initiated the practice of non-employment of domestic staff (self-help) in convents in Nigeria. They hardly depend on anyone to do their cooking and house chores and were almost the first indigenous Sisters seen driving their cars themselves, driving even tractors to do their farm work without the assistance of paid drivers. It was a sight to behold and quite a novelty in the seventies and early eighties. Since then many other Congregations have realized the need to be self- sufficient and less dependent on external staff in their communities. The survival, existence, presence and services of the Daughters have certainly made the Universal Church richer in many respects.

Location of Houses and Numerical Strength

The Generalate of the Congregation is located in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State and the Congregation has two formation houses; the Postulate and the Novitiate which are also located in the Diocese of Enugu. The members witness to God’s love in many Dioceses in Nigeria and God has borne them on His wings of love to other Countries outside Nigeria: Austria, Cameroon, Cuba, England, France, Gabon, Germany, Haiti, Italy, Jamaica, Kenya, Mali, Scotland, Switzerland, T’Chad and the United States of America.

The Lord has generously blessed the Congregation with teeming vocation, for this we are thankful. We have over nine hundred wonderful Daughters who are working for the spread of the gospel of Christ.

Projects of the Congregation:

The Daughters, clutching on the oars of the God of the love and Divine Providence, were able to surf the crest of the overwhelming storms of the past. Their survival is one of the greatest miracles of God’s love. They are today one of the major contributors to the growth of the Church in Nigeria.
